Check Your Speed

Your car has a speedometer. Why doesn’t your production line?

Think about it. You’ve driven for years. You know what 30 mph feels like. You know what 70 mph feels like. Yet the speedometer is still sitting front and center. Why? Because “it feels about right” isn’t good enough.

The same thing applies to automated equipment. Stand next to a machine running 100 parts per minute. Now watch it run at 95. Can you tell the difference? Probably not, but that 5% can be the difference between hitting the number and missing it.

That’s why one of our favorite visual factory metrics is also one of the simplest:

Actual Speed vs. Target Speed

100 / 100? Great.

95 / 100? Now everyone can see there’s a problem.

No spreadsheet, no end-of-shift report, no guessing based on how the machine sounds. Just a big, obvious speedometer for the process.

Here’s the interesting part: almost certainly, your machine already knows its speed. That data is probably sitting in a PLC, a database, or another control system right now.

You already have the data. The problem is that the people who need to see it often can’t.

That’s exactly where DataCaster comes in.

DataCaster gives you the ability to take the data you already have and put it where people can actually use it: on a television, out on the plant floor, in real time.

If knowing your speed is important enough to put directly in front of every driver, it’s probably important enough to put in front of every production team.
